Working with Luminosity Should we wish to
target our changes to the underlying black & white (Luminosity) content
of the image then we need to carry out the adjustments to 'Curves' via
an 'Adjustment Layer'. |

Although the 'curve' has been deliberately exaggerated for this example,
note that the colour content remains. The severe changes are brought
about by the 'curve' affecting 'Luminosity' only so that only
the black & white content is distorted - flattening and going negative
in some areas. The image below shows the effect when the 'Blend Mode' is restored to 'Normal'. |

As we can see, the shape of the 'curve' is the same but the colours are
severely distorted. This clearly illustrates the advantage to be gained
by changing the 'Blend Mode' to 'Luminosity' when making contrast adjustments
to the 'curve'. Small adjustments will not result in much perceptible distortion of colour but large changes will as we can clearly see. |
