  1. Duplicate Layer
  2. Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur - try 3.0 on a 6mb file
  3. Change blend mode of Blur layer to 'Screen'
  4. Change opacity of Blur layer to 75%
  5. Change to Channels palette and Ctrl Click on the Green Channel
  6. Return to Layers palette
  7. Make Levels Adjustment layer (Ctrl + new layer button) Tick 'Group with previous layer', this picks up the selection
  8. Type in the Input Levels as

  10. Make Hue & Sat Adjustment layer - Reduce saturation to around zero
  11. Make Curves Adjustment layer - use the pen to draw the 'square' curve below (as close to the left and top edges as possible)
  12. Click 'Smooth' several times to smooth the curve
  13. Change the opacity of the Curves adjustment layer to suit image
  14. Sharpen the 'Levels' Adjustment layer if more definition required
  15. Adjust individual layers to suit the particular picture
  16. To get a sort of hand tinted effect, try changing the layer blending modes of the Hue & Sat adjustment layer. 'Darken' or 'Luminosity' work quite well
