Setting 'Preferences' in CC

Many of these settings also apply to later CS versions and CS6

Guides & Grid

The only change I make to the 'Guides & Grids' preferences is to set the 'Grid' 'Gridline every': to 25 percent. 
I leave the 'Subdivisions' set at 4.

I choose 25 percent as this presents a grid spacing that suits the way I work. I find the default setting for mesh / grid pattern to be to fine for me. Try different settings until you're comfortable.

The preset colour for Guides, Grid, etc. can also be set within this dialogue box. This can be altered to suit the image you have open.
